The Coromandel Peninsula

The Coromandel, New Zealanders favourite destination, is within an hours drive of the major centres of Auckland and Hamilton and their International Airports and yet the region is a world away from the hustle and bustle of those cities.

Fabulous golden and white sand beaches with magnificent coastal scenery, a rugged, forest cloaked interior waiting to be explored are just some of the natural attractions that have people returning to The Coromandel time after time.

Coromandel Town

With its relaxed, laid-back lifestyle, Coromandel attracts talented artists and craftspeople from around the country (paintings, pottery, ceramics, glass, woodcarving, weavings, jewellery) - inspired not only by the tranquil atmosphere, but also by the spectacular natural surrounds.

The discovery of gold at Driving Creek in 1852 brought a boom to Coromandel Town, and the area has continued to flourish while retaining much of its history from those times.

Coromandel is wellknown for its seafood delicacies, especially oysters, mussels and lobsters, as well as its history based around goldmining, timber and fishing.

Local Coromandel attractions include:

  • Short walking distance to Long Bay or Coromandel Harbour shoreline
  • Kauri walk
